What drives wall and ceiling painting cost
What a room costs to paint depends on more than square footage. Surface condition, ceiling height, the number of colors, how much trim and edge work is involved, whether there's old texture to deal with, all of it affects time and materials. Rough or damaged surfaces take prep before a brush ever touches them. Skipping that step is how you end up with visible seams and finish that starts peeling in two years. Steve Greene Painting works through the prep first, every time. Call for a free estimate and get a straight answer on scope and cost.
Wall and ceiling painting is the most common interior painting request, and also one of the most variable jobs in terms of what's actually involved. A freshly primed new-construction room is a different job than a 1990s split-level with original popcorn ceilings, dark accent walls, and drywall dings that need patching before paint goes on. Size, condition, sheen selection, and ceiling type all move the final number. Every job is different, contact Steve Greene Painting for an accurate estimate. For ceilings with staining or water damage, that's handled under water-damaged ceiling restoration, which is a separate process from standard repainting.

Scope
What's included in a standard paint job
A real paint job isn't just rolling color on a wall.
- 01
Surface assessment and prep
Walls and ceilings get checked for holes, cracks, drywall seams, and surface damage before anything else. Patching and priming those areas first is what keeps the final coat from showing every flaw underneath.
- 02
Protection of adjacent surfaces
Trim, flooring, and fixtures get masked or covered. Cutting in cleanly at every edge, ceiling line, baseboard, door and window casings, is where most painters cut corners. It shows.
- 03
Priming where it's needed
Fresh patches, stained areas, and surface changes need primer before topcoat. Skipping this step is common. It's also why cheap paint jobs look chalky and uneven six months later.
- 04
Finish coats and final inspection
Two coats are standard for most applications. Sheen matters too, flat, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss each have appropriate uses depending on the room and surface. The final pass checks edges and coverage before cleanup.
Ceiling painting is its own trade
Pricing
Cost factors worth understanding
Room size and ceiling height
More square footage and higher ceilings mean more time and material. Vaulted ceilings and two-story spaces also require different equipment and staging.
Surface condition
New drywall or freshly painted surfaces take less prep. Older walls with texture, damage, or multiple previous paint layers add time before the first finish coat goes on.
Color count and sheen changes
Going from a dark color to a light one, or painting multiple accent walls in different colors, adds coats and dry time. Sheen changes between surfaces also require careful product selection.
Scope of adjacent work
Walls rarely exist in isolation. If trim, molding, or doors are getting painted at the same time, that gets priced together. Separate scopes run up cost if they require return visits.
Our Process
How the process works
- 01
Estimate and walkthrough
A quick walk through the space sets the scope. Surface condition, color transitions, ceiling type, and any adjacent work get noted before any number goes on paper.
- 02
Prep and prime
Holes patched, cracks filled, surfaces primed where needed. Protection goes down on floors, trim, and fixtures. This phase is what separates a durable finish from one that fails early.
- 03
Paint and cleanup
Walls and ceilings finished in sequence, edges cut in clean, full cleanup before leaving. The job isn't done until the room looks like nobody was there except the paint on the walls.

What reviewers say about the work actually check
Steve + Team did a phenomenal job painting all 4400 sq ft interior painting while we were on vacation for a week, even finishing the job early! They fixed drywall errors (of which I was oblivious prior to him pointing out the flaws in the initial quote), touched up the enamel/molding, and did a beautiful job beyond our expectations even cleaning up so well after themselves. We were beyond impressed and would absolutely hire them again and recommend others do the same!
On my main level, Steve painted my oak kitchen cabinets, fixed my ceiling and then resprayed the entire ceiling. I added on to the project and had the downstairs painted. Steve and his team did a great job. I was impressed with the responsiveness and attention to detail. I couldn’t be happier with the results and would definitely recommend!
Our wooden window sills/frames needed some repair, and we hired Steve and his team to re-stain and varnish all the window frames in our house. I can't believe the difference. Many of them were faded and some looked like the wood was starting to rot. After Steve and his team were here, they look completely different. They did a great job, and I would definitely hire them again. Steve is very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain his process.
We hired Steve to white enamel our main level cabinets, molding and stairwell which initially were oak. The finished product was beautiful and he did such an exceptional job that we additionally had him paint our ceiling and walls. Steve is extremely knowledgeable, reliable and easy to work with. He is committed to providing high quality services at reasonable costs. We will definitely be using him again for future projects!
