How the Removal Process Works Process

Three stages, no shortcuts between them.

    Mask and Protect

    Before anything comes off the ceiling, I seal the floors and mask the walls. Popcorn creates a fine, chalky dust when it scrapes. Skipping the prep means that dust ends up in your furniture, your HVAC vents, and your carpet. I don't skip it.

  2. 02

    Scrape and Assess

    I wet the texture to loosen it, then scrape it clean. Once the surface is bare, I look at what the popcorn was hiding. Tape seams, gouges, soft spots. Anything that needs to be addressed before paint gets noted and fixed.

  3. 03

    Skim, Sand, and Prime

    A flat ceiling means a smooth ceiling. I skim coat where the surface needs it, sand until there are no ridges or tool marks, and prime before painting. That's what makes the finish coat look right under light.

How long does it take a professional to remove a popcorn ceiling?
A single room typically takes one day when you factor in masking, scraping, patching, skim work, and prime. Larger spaces or ceilings with painted-over texture take longer. If I'm also painting the ceiling afterward, plan for a second day or a long first one. I'll give you a realistic timeline during the estimate, not after I've started.
Can a popcorn ceiling be smoothed without full removal?
It can be skim coated over in some cases, but the result isn't always as clean. If the popcorn is thick or uneven, skim coating over it adds weight and may not fully hide the texture under raking light. What happens to the drywall after the texture is scraped off?
It depends on the ceiling. Some drywall underneath is in solid shape and needs only light patching. Other ceilings, particularly in older homes, were never fully finished before the texture was applied. In those cases, the tape seams and fastener lines show and need skim work before painting. I look at the surface after scraping and tell you exactly what it needs before I start painting.
Do I need to worry about asbestos in my popcorn ceiling?
If your home was built before 1978, the answer is possibly yes. Asbestos was sometimes used as a binder in spray texture products during that era. I don't test for asbestos and I don't perform asbestos abatement. If your home is pre-1978 and the ceiling hasn't been tested, get that done before scheduling any removal work. A licensed asbestos inspector can test a small sample.
Can you paint the ceiling the same day you remove the texture?
Usually not the same day. After scraping and patching, the skim coat and any joint compound need time to dry fully before sanding and priming. Rushing that stage shows up in the finished paint job. I'd rather take the time to do it right than hand you a ceiling that shows lap marks or sanding ridges six months later. Most jobs run over two days.
